Adramal arrives in Kyer Altamar and is arrested on suspicion of the cattle brand murders, then released without charge. Tagahra asks her to look for anything suspicious at Kyturil, but she refuses. She sends a message to Alesin about the murders.

Adramal leaves Kyer Altamar. On the road to Darund-Kerak, she heals Chavaen's broken arm, earning the nickname "barefoot healer." Hispar asks her to become the village's resident healer.

Shendar murders a Zerimuni trader.

Tagahra comes to Darund-Kerak to ask Adramal to examine the Zerimuni's body. She agrees, and confirms that the cattle brand killer is a wizard.

Adramal returns to Darund-Kerak, to find an invitation from Kyturil waiting for her.

Adramal goes to Kyer Altamar to agree to Tagahra's plan to spy on the teachers at Kyturil. She then goes to Kyturil, where she passes the entrance exam.

Adramal's first lessons at Kyturil. She meets Perinar and sees the library for the first time.

Adramal overhears a suspicious conversation between Eskalyn and Lorgrim.

Adramal and Perinar get into a fight with Grenur.

Adramal eavesdrops on the teachers during their dinner, but learns nothing.

Shendar murders the Salmarian Deputy Ambassador. Degoran fights with her, and she wins, seriously wounding him.

Adramal goes to Kyer Altamar and examines the Deputy Ambassador's body. She then goes to Darund-Kerak to treat patients and has a crucial insight about the killer's method. She sends a message about it to Captain Tagahra.

Degoran cancels his lessons. Adramal's first kiss with Perinar. Adramal questions Rakbanorath about Degoran's "illness."

Adramal searches Kyturil's library to try to find the meaning of the symbol that Shendar carved into her victims.

Adramal continues searching the library and discovers that there may once have been a fourteenth God, not named in the calendar. Tagahra comes to Kyturil in disguise and tells her to look for the murder weapon. She searches Degoran's tower, but Shendar disturbs her.

Degoran uses mindspeech to tell Adramal about his fight with Shendar. Adramal discovers a book in the library that suggests the fourteenth God is Zorian, the villain in Centador's founding myth, and may still be alive.

The teachers charge Adramal with burglary over her entry to Degoran's tower. Perinar covers for her by saying she spent the night with him. Shendar murders Degoran.

Adramal and Perinar go to Kyer Altamar, but receive a message from Tagahra to go back to Kyturil, where he is investigating Degoran's death. Adramal and Perinar confess their love for one another.

Degoran's funeral. Priests of Mathran arrest Lorgrim and Rakbanorath for his murder.

Adramal and Perinar work out that Shendar must have killed Degoran. Adramal races to Kyer Altamar to tell Tagahra, but Shendar abducts her. Lelsarin pretends to be Zorian, to win Shendar's trust. They go to a ruined Temple of Zorian in the Marchwood. Shendar tries to convince the resident Kreztalin that Zorian has returned, but they see through her lie and kill her. Adramal escapes.

Adramal returns to Kyer Altamar. Lelsarin reveals that Zorian is a God and is still alive. She goes to "sleep" to recover from the injuries sustained at the Temple. Perinar goes to Kyer Altamar with the evidence that clears Lorgrim and Rakbanorath of Degoran's murder.

Adramal convalescing at Tagahra's house. Tagahra arrests Eskalyn and Lorgrim for embezzling Kyturil's funds.

Alesin arrives in Kyer Altamar from Thuren. She tells him about Shendar and Zorian, and he sends her to Salmar for safety.

Adramal is accepted as a clerk at the Centadorian Embassy.

Nastrion and dathi-Kh'amin return to Jekhrath and threaten him. He rebuffs them.

A group of wizards, including Galbreth, departs Thuren for Kyer Altamar. Adramal visits the King Atharr Market in Vannharial and is almost arrested for assisting an unlicensed seller.

Salmarian Navy arrives to blockade Voltroth. Nevgalyn's mother falls ill.

Priests of Groll trick Adramal into revealing herself as a wizard and arrest her.

Kaltaryn falls ill.

Nevgalyn leaves Voltroth to seek help for the plague.

Nevgalyn's mother dies.

Kynar visits Adramal in prison.

Nevgalyn arrives in Vannharial.

Nevgalyn put in prison next to Adramal. Priests hold Adramal's trial and sentence her to death. Okarith dies.

Adramal works out that the plague is caused by a poison, rather than something contagious. Pathtunn and cronies threaten Adramal to try to make her leave Voltroth.

Nevgalyn tries to find the source of the poison. Adramal meets Faldran.

Pathtunn kidnaps Adramal and tries to kill her. Jekhrath rescues her.

Faldran tries to bargain for his release. Jekhrath is found dead after his house is set on fire.

Jekhrath's funeral. Adramal discovers he had a supply of obsidian. Faldran tells Adramal about Nastrion's visits to Jekhrath. Advisers work out the poison must be in the dathi-Kh'amin's caves.

Adramal, Nevgalyn, Faldran and Denterall enter the dathi-Kh'amin's caves. They retrieve the poison and find a crystal that multiplies light spells. They encounter Nastrion, whose presence wakes up Lelsarin. They return to the village and prepare for an attack from the dathi-Kh'amin.

dathi-Kh'amin return Lathtryn and Handrakk, then demolish the village's entrances to their caves. Zaud abducts Smollyn, claiming the dathi-Kh'amin killed him, and convinces the villagers to proclaim him Leader.

Lathtryn tells Adramal about Jekhrath's obsidian.

Adramal and Lelsarin kill Nastrion. Nevgalyn and Tordellyn rescue Smollyn. Smollyn resigns as Leader. Nevgalyn becomes the new Leader. Alesin leaves Kyer Altamar for Voltroth.

Adramal wakes up after the battle with Nastrion.

Adramal and Nevgalyn make love. Galdrakh closes Shomnakh Enkhyar to all visitors.

Alesin arrives in Voltroth. Perinar returns to Kyer Altamar and joins the Watch.

Lakhshram takes Adramal and Alesin to see Jinerlsh and attempts to see Erbitakh. Robbers attack Lakhshram, Adramal and Alesin. Sethraim sends a message to tell Alesin that Eskalyn has escaped and Marik is dead.

Pyram asks Adramal and Alesin not to look for the codicil, offering to better Doshanbe and Movathre's payment. Perinar connects the disappearances in Kyer Altamar to the earlier ones in the countryside.

Nysbanskel goes to the Temple of Imil, revealing part of a message from Shomnakh Enkhyar. Adramal and Alesin reject Pyram's offer.

Lakhshram takes Adramal and Alesin to see Erbitakh. Kelstakh recruits Alesin to help the Revenue Service find evidence of Galdrakh's smuggling activities.

Quirilyan seeks Adramal's help in finding Sokethrimar. Alesin starts working for Kelstakh.

Alesin receives Sethraim's message about Eskalyn and Marik. The Governor-General designates Galdrakh as his successor. Lelsarin realises that the vision from Shomnakh Enkhyar contains an encoded message.

Adramal and Alesin leave Molkolin.

Rebel Kreztalin arrives in Darund-Kerak.

Adramal accepts she is probably pregnant.

Adramal and Alesin return to Kyer Altamar.

Adramal tries to settle things with Perinar. Rebel Kreztalin asks her to come to Darund-Kerak.

Suloras attacks Adramal and dies unexpectedly.

Lelsarin realises that the key to decode the message from Shomnakh Enkhyar is the crystal they found in the dathi-Kh'amin's caves. Adramal decodes the message, but cannot understand the spells that are revealed.

Perinar goes to Kyturil to find On Spells and the Means of Conveying Them.
