Benchwatchers wins HACCA 1998

Our film The Benchwatchers of Borehamwood won first place in the 1998 HACCA competition, which was held in St Albans on Saturday 30 January 1999. Below is a picture of some of the people who made the film, admiring the trophy.

HACCA is an annual competition amongst five amateur film clubs in South Hertfordshire, namely Hemel Hempstead, Potters Bar, St Albans, Watford and Borehamwood (us). Each club shows a programme of films, lasting no more than twenty-five minutes. The winning club is the one which, in the judges' opinion, has the best individual film. Benchwatchers beat some very stiff opposition to take first place. I was as astonished as anybody else when the judges announced that it had won. I looked like a stunned herring as the chairman of the St Albans club handed me the trophy.

Our triumph is all the more surprising when you consider that we made the film in a tearing hurry - 3 days' shooting and a day's editing. Fraser, the director, at first didn't want to enter it for the competition; he thought there were too many things wrong with it, and that the judges would tear it to pieces. I think perhaps he's too critical of his own work.

There's no money involved, but we do get a nice little silver plate to keep. We hold the shield that you see in the picture for a year, until the next competition. I'd like to thank all the people who made it possible for us to win this award. Thank you!
